Community Connection focuses on meeting the needs of the community through partnerships with other schools, nonprofits, governmental agencies, or other agencies. This project has partnered with the Special Needs Organization of South Mississippi, Feeding the Gulf Coast, Angel Tree, and others in our service area. The project is also home to Buckets of Happiness.
The mission of Buckets of Happiness is to provide Ocean Springs Hospital and Biloxi Regional Medical Center’s Labor & Delivery and Pediatrics departments with needed items. We provide items that parents and families are not able to purchase themselves, and we also provide some extra “happy” items to help make a child’s hospital stay a little easier.
Labor & Delivery
The main focus for Labor and Delivery is providing infant car seats for parents who cannot afford one. The law says a baby cannot leave the hospital without the appropriate car seat. While we always attempt to keep at least two car seats at each hospital, we often receive calls for additional car seats. We also supply long sleeve infant shirts, socks, and mittens. Sometimes if the hospital runs out of clothes and parents do not have any, the infant must wear a paper shirt.
Extra toiletry items, coloring books, crayons, games, puzzles, books and notepads are donated to Pediatrics. We also donate underwear, socks, and other clothing items by special request. We purchased a DVD player for the Ocean Springs Pediatrics Department in 2012 and like to periodically donate new DVDs.
In addition to Labor & Delivery and Pediatrics, a few times a year we also bring simple, seasonal decorations to the nurse stations to brighten and cheer up staff and patients. While making deliveries, we also bring a candy-filled bowl for the doctors and nurses.
The Ocean Springs Hospital and Biloxi Regional Medical Center staffs are wonderful and grateful for everything we do and always thank us for providing needed items.
“We really do appreciate you guys so much! You make a difference to our patients and staff. Smiles are important to healing and decreasing stress, and you make us all smile!” – Candy Bearor, RNC – OB Director, Maternal/Child Departments Biloxi Regional Medical Center
